This month, KARST is pleased to welcome two graduate artists for a six-month studio residency, Charlotte Henry Stumpe (Arts University Plymouth) and Lily Maddcocks (Bath Spa University).
Charlotte Henry-Stumpe is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is concerned with matrilineal connections, memories, mythologies and censored histories. Drawing on lived experiences in contemporary British society, Henry-Stumpe creates wearable assemblage ephemera, hand-sewn art objects and experimental films. Her re-imagined artifacts subvert methods of control by reclaiming linguistic narratives in an attempt to challenge our outdated traditions and systems.
Charlotte says: “I am really looking forward to joining the community of creatives at KARST and with the residency as a platform, I aim to continue to connect with Plymouth’s community via participatory works. I hope to begin to develop my textile works sculpturally and further explore my research informed process of making. Having a shared studio and the opportunity for play, will give me the time and space to develop my practice, enabling more experimental and radical outcomes.”
Lily Maddocks is an artist from the South West who works primarily with print and paint. She uses her practice to engage with and respond to her environment, often working directly with materials collected during time spent outdoors. Taking a process-led approach, Lily forms a connection between location, method and material, with earth pigment making being a central part of her work.
Lily says: “I am excited to make full use of having a studio near both Dartmoor and the coast and am intending to spend my time at KARST making work which responds to this beautiful part of the country”.
